I am lucky enough to have had a great dad, funny, clever, my friend, my advisor and my role model. Although he died too soon a few years ago, we were able to spend his precious last few months together with my brothers and sister talking and laughing in ways that only a family can with dark humour and deep love. During that time I was able to tell him what he meant to me and how loved he was. He was able to do the same and also put it in a letter that I cherish as much as I do my husband and son and would certainly enter a burning building to rescue.
During his final year, thanks to an idea from David Fox at Tampopo restaurants we discussed his Inheritance tracks and Desert Island Discs, this enabled me to learn so much more about his early years and download the soundtrack to his life. I now listen to those songs regularly and it takes me back to my early days sitting in the “best room” on a Sunday while he read the papers and listened to Jazz, Frank Sinatra and Barbra Streisand.
Why am I telling you this? It’s simple, don’t leave it too late to tell your dad you love him and find out his Inheritance tracks and Desert Island Discs. One day, like me, you will want to sit, listen and make believe just for a moment he is right next to you again.
Thanks Dad – Miss you X
